But the desert world cup will take place, no matter what. And it will be played in summertime and in the desert.
What can be the problem; corruption? Previous WC’s weren’t free from the rumors of corruption being involved. The heat? What about the hot weather conditions in the WC USA and Mexico; they played at the hottest moment of day and why? Primetime for the TV viewers in the big countries (read rich). Gay rights in Qatar? Womens rights aren’t existing in Qatar. But what then about the WC in 1934, given to Mussolini’s Italy and in 1978 it was appointed to the military junta regime in Argentina?
Human rights weren’t any objection for appointing the WC 2018 to Russia.
What about all the deadly victims, building the new stadium in the desert? A rough estimation states that over 1.100 Nepalese and Indian workers died since 2010 in Qatar. According the British Guardian; the death toll will rise to about 4.000 by its start in 2022. Dramatic, but than what about the casualties in South Africa and Brazil,…..
So; there is actually nothing new going on, whether its hot in the desert or not. The World Cup will take place, and there is nothing that will change that.
Why isn’t it played in winter time? This question will be answered by FIFA at the earliest by the end of this year. But I will give you the answer; Forget about it. January and February are excluded, since the wintergames will attract all the sponsoring. November and December? Not likely, since all the marketing budgets will be sucked up by the Christmas campaigns. What about the big European leagues; will they be put on hold? Premier league, Bundesliga, Primera Division, Champions league,…? No change. FIFA can play hardball, but its unlikely. Financially, they just can’t afford it.
Broadcasting rights for the World Cup in Qatar are already sold. The American giant Fox paid over 425 million USD for broadcasting the world cups in Russia and Qatar. And this on the condition that the WC doesn’t take place at the same time as the NHL-Play-Offs or the Super Bowl, being played at the end of January. Both events attract more viewers in the USA than the World Cup soccer and will generate much more publicity revenue.
Can you imagine the claims if the World Cup would be changed from summer to winter time?
